The Deification of a Nation:The Idolatry of the Religious Right

“I don’t know if atheists should be considered citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God.”  – George Bush Sr., O’Hare Airport, Chicago, Ill.,  Aug. 27, 1988

I wonder if George Bush Sr. forgot about all those atheists who fought and died for our country starting with the Revolutionary War and going up through the 21st century.  Did he ever hear of foxhole conversions? And is Bush Sr. aware that the phrase, “one nation under God” was not added to the Pledge of Allegiance until 1954?  Let’s face it, contrary to what George Bush Sr. believes, the United States Constitution  is proof- positive that the United States of America is not a Christian nation. Indeed, the First Amendment precludes the U.S. from being a  so-called Christian nation. Needless to say, “freedom of religion” also includes freedom from religion. But look even closer: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion…” And since it is the U.S. Constitution that IS the “law of the land”- and not the Declaration of Independence-  as so many of the uninformed seem to think, that pretty much says it all. But there is more.

Ultimately, the goal of this work is not to provide more proof refuting the myth that America is a “Christian” nation.  There are countless books and  resources that have already done that. Rather, the goal of this work is to prove that American Evangelicals are, and have been engaged in the sin of idolatry and the worshipping of a false god. However, a brief  overview of the irrefutable proof that the United States is not a Christian nation will now be provided:

1) Article 11 of  the Treaty of Tripoli signed in 1797 by John Adams, the 2nd President of the United States, and a fellow signer of the Declaration of Independence states:

Art. 11. AS THE GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IS NOT, IN ANY SENSE, FOUNDED ON THE CHRISTIAN RELIGION (emphasis mine- KM); as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen (Muslims – KM); and, as the said states never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan (Islamic- KM) nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries. (1)

2) The Law of the Land is the United States Constitution and NOT the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence was, in essence, a list of grievances against England in general, and King George III in particular. These grievances are no longer in effect. And since the Law of the Land is the U.S. Constitution, this is where we would expect to find the proof for the claim that the United States is a Christian nation. To the contrary! Nowhere in the U.S. Constitution will you find the words: Lord, Christian, or Christianity. Indeed, you will find no mention of Jesus or God anywhere in the U.S. Constitution! How did our “Christian” Founding Fathers miss that one?

3) Article VI, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution reads, “… no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any office or public Trust under the United States.” (2)  In other words, a “Christian” nation that allows Christ rejecting  atheists to run a “Christian” nation!

4) The Founding Fathers: Contrary to what some would have you believe, many of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were Deists. (3)  Indeed not only did George Washington have deist leanings, he was also a Mason:

“Washington revealed almost nothing to indicate his spiritual frame of mind, hardly a mark of a Christian. In his thousands of letters, the name of Jesus Christ never appears. He rarely spoke about his religion, but his Freemasonry experience points to a belief in deism. Washington’s initiation occurred at the Fredericksburg Lodge on 4 November 1752, later becoming a Master mason in 1799, and remained a freemason until he died.

To the United Baptist Churches in Virginia in May, 1789, Washington said that every man ‘ought to be protected in worshipping the Deity according to the dictates of his own conscience.'” (4)

Consider now some quotes from our Founding Fathers:

“During almost fifteen centuries has the legal establishment of Christianity been on trial. What have been its fruits? More or less in all places, pride and indolence in the Clergy, ignorance and servility in the laity, in both, superstition, bigotry, and persecution.

What influence, in fact, have ecclesiastical establishments had on society? In some instances they have been seen to erect a spiritual tyranny on the ruins of the civil authority; on many instances they have been seen upholding the thrones of political tyranny;  in no instance have they been guardians of the liberties of the people. Rulers who wish to subvert the public liberty may have found an established clergy convenient auxiliaries. A just government, instituted to secure and perpetuate it, needs them not.” – James Madison, Memorial and Remonstrance Against Religious Assessments, 1785.

“Among the features peculiar to the political system of the United States, is the perfect equality of rights which it secures TO EVERY RELIGIOUS SECT.” -James Madison, Letter to  Jacob de la  Motta,  August, 1820, (emphasis mine- KM).

“Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies SOLELY BETWEEN MAN AND HIS GOD.” -Thomas Jefferson, Letter to the Danbury Baptist Association, January 1, 1802 (emphasis mine- KM).

“I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should ‘make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,’  THUS BUILDING A WALL OF SEPARATION BETWEEN CHURCH AND STATE.”  – Thomas Jefferson,  Letter to the  Danbury Baptist Association, January 1, 1802 (emphasis mine- KM).

“Question with boldness even the existence of God…” – Thomas Jefferson,  Letter to Peter Carr, August 10, 1787.

The United States is a nation which includes Christians. But the United State is NOT a Christian nation! It is what it “is.” The Religious Right has the hapless job of trying to refute “what is” with “what isn’t.” Before we proceed to the steps needed to deify a nation, let us listen very carefully to the words of the Lord Jesus:

“My kingdom is not of this world…” (John 18:36)

“The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS WITHIN YOU” (emphasis mine- KM) (Luke 17:20,21).

“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

(2 Chronicles 7:14)

“George Bush was not elected by a majority of the voters in the United States, he was appointed by God.”*

-Lt. Gen. William G. Boykin

If  ever there was a verse in the Bible that has been twisted completely out of its context, it is 2 Chronicles 7:14. The Religious Right have ripped this verse out its theological and historical context and have attempted (and failed) to apply it to the United States. Talk about Scripture twisting (see 2 Peter 3:16)! This passage contains the conditions that were needed for the national forgiveness of Israel’s sins at that time (450-430 B.C.). This is Old Covenant Israel we are talking about here, and NOT the United States of America. But then again, when a “religious movement” that  has a proven track record of deception, hatred, violence, and ultimately a total disregard for the Law- both God’s and man’s (the Constitution)- everything is fair game, including the Book they claim to live by. The reality though is the current state of the “American” Church is “Ichabod- the glory is gone” (1 Sam. 4:21)! The American Church is a dead church. And  a dead church requires a new source of energy (or life) having been cut off from the True Source- due to its idolatry- and what better alternative source is there than political activism. After all, it is political activism that truly satisfies the hunger of the humanistic beast that resides within the heart of most evangelicals. And it is political activism that is the fuel that feeds the fire of one’s prejudices. But more importantly, it is political activism that is the salve for easing the conscience of the idolater. So how then is the Religious Right guilty of Idolatry? Quite simply, ALL the teachings of Jesus have been displaced by an agenda: The Republican Agenda. And once you have abandoned even Christ’s most “basic teachings” such as: Loving EVERYONE, including your enemies (see Matt. 5:44), showing mercy (see Matt 5:7),  becoming  a peacemaker (see Matt. 5:9), being willing to sell all and give to the poor (see Mark 10:21), and have replaced them with the agenda of a money grubbing war machine that teaches and promotes hate, you have ultimately abandoned Christ Himself. And when a “religious movement” has abandoned its Lord, then the building projects begin (see Exodus, chapter 32). Indeed, “creating” the illusion that the United States is a Christian nation is the Religious Right’s Golden Calf.  After all, who needs God when you have deified the nation? The Religious Right is nothing more than a movement made up of idolaters. Period. Have nothing to do with them!

Yet, it doesn’t stop there. The Religious Right has been actively engaged in the building of their own Tower of Babel. And just as  it was during the time of the building of the “original” Tower of Babel,  pride and rebellion  are the driving force behind this operation:

“And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name [for ourselves] lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth”  (Genesis 11:4).

Unfortunately, there is no chance of these New Babel Builders being scattered anytime soon for they too have one language: The language of Hate. Hate is incredibly unifying. Indeed, the building blocks of this new Tower of Babel are hate, fear, and ignorance, with the mortar for these blocks being the Fox News Channel, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Newt Gingrich, Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann, et al. So there now, the Religious Right has its Golden Calf and Tower.  At least true followers of Christ can rest assured in knowing Who is NOT behind this operation:

“Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh [stays awake] but in vain” (Psalm 127:1).

Let us now review the current situation. The Religious Right has shown itself to be a movement that ultimately promotes a Christless Christianity. A movement that preaches a gospel of hate (“another gospel” – Galatians 1:8), and “preaches another Jesus” (2 Corinthians 11:4), which is none other than the idol of their own creation. A false god created in their own sinful image. This is the Idol of the Religious Right: A graven image of themselves. This Idol is nothing other than the Religious Right State. This State then becomes Supreme. Authoritarian control is instituted (or should I say enthroned?), and the God they claimed to have known is now dethroned. Evil men have once again deified themselves under the cloak of religion.  But then again, the history of Christianity could best be described as a history of hijackings. As one writer has pointed out,  “before the Christian faith was identified with the Empire in the 4th century, it was dangerous being a Christian. However, after the Christian faith became identified with ( or absorbed  into) the Empire,  it then became dangerous not being a  Christian.”  In other words, as another writer put it, “the persecuted church  became the persecuting church.”  So in that sense nothing has changed. Only now- for us Americans- things are looking a lot more bleak concerning the preservation of our Constitution and our personal freedoms, especially our First Amendment freedoms, thanks to the political cancer known as the Religious Right.

God help us.

* Think about it: Would God “bless” America with the most corrupt  and deceptive Administration (Bush/ Cheney) in the history of the United States? To ask the question is to answer it.
